It's time for homemade Christmas gifts - here's an idea for you...

A wooden box (4mm poplar plywood) and lasered acrylic plates (3 mm transparent XT or GS) are required. LEDs illuminate the acrylic panels and create wonderful effects. I will provide you with the files for the wooden box and the acrylic plates. The box and the plates are engraved and cut using a laser cutter.

You can create the box with one or two acrylic sheets, but the effects are more impressive with two sheets. With the buttons you can change the colour of the front and rear LEDs, they also activate the "rainbow" and "colour wipe" animations of the Adafruit NeoPixel library.

High-Contrast Edge-Lit Aesthetics

This project combines custom-etched acrylic with addressable LEDs to create stunning luminous signage and artistic displays.

  • Total Internal Reflection Mapping: The Arduino manages a strip of WS2812B LEDs mounted at the edge of the acrylic. Light travels through the plastic and only "Escapes" where there are scratches or engravings, making the designs glow.
  • Programmable Color Palette: Users can cycle through animated "Fires," "Rainbows," and "Breathing" patterns via a physical button. The Arduino calculates the color-fade values in real-time for every pixel.

Aesthetics

  • Diffused Gradient Fade: Includes a software routine that ensures colors transition smoothly across the etched design, providing a premium, high-fidelity look to the illuminated sign.
