Size matters! PICO has big dreams of making small things a reality. A mini fully-fledged Arduino has been a dream for many enthusiast hardcore DIYers. With the size of only 0.6”x0.6”, the PICO shouts to be your best new friend around.
Can you imagine the possibilities already? Arduino has never been so small and so capable like now.

Micro-Sizing Hardware: ATtiny85 Projects
The Arduino Uno is huge. Even the Arduino Nano is too big for a smart ring or a tiny spy-bug. The ATtiny85 Microcontroller (often utilized in tiny boards like the Digispark or generic "Pico" variants) represents the ultimate form of hardware minimization. It shrinks the entire "Arduino" down to an 8-legged chip the size of a fingernail.
Removing the USB Overhead
An Uno has a large silver USB port and a dedicated USB-to-Serial chip. The ATtiny85 strips all that away to save space.
- The Programmer Setup: You cannot plug a USB cable directly into a raw ATtiny85. You must use a standard Arduino Uno as an ISP (In-System Programmer).
- You wire 6 jumper cables (
MISO, MOSI, SCK, RESET, VCC, GND) from the Uno to the tiny 8-legged chip on a breadboard. - You select "Arduino as ISP" in the IDE, and push the blink sketch code through the Uno, into the ATtiny's microscopic 8KB flash memory.
Working with Extreme Limitations
The ATtiny85 is incredibly powerful (running the exact same code language), but physically restricted.
- It only has 5 usable digital pins (two of which have PWM).
- Memory Check: You cannot include heavy libraries (like
Adafruit_GFX.hfor massive OLED fonts) because it will instantly overfill the 8KB storage limit! - Clock Speed: It often runs at 8MHz internally (half the speed of an Uno) to save massive amounts of battery power.
The Perfect Use Case
- Embedded into a 3D-printed prop gun to make sounds when the trigger is pulled.
- Sewn into a jacket to run a tiny string of 10 WS2812B NeoPixels.
- Used as a standalone watchdog timer that wakes up a larger Wi-Fi board every 12 hours!
