DMX512 has proven a rugged, reliable serial data interface specification for two decades now. Adopted as a standard in the entertainment lighting industry, it is often the best and most convenient way to control OEM equipment.

Having a small handheld tester is crucial to troubleshooting any system.

This collection of shields and associated code provide the basis for a simple tester. The "Select" button toggles between the Transmit and Recieve modes of operation. The "UP" and "DOWN" buttons provide scrolling channel selection, while the "LEFT" and "RIGHT" keys provide adjustment of the selected channels intensity.

In some of the documentation the 4 Relay Shield is shown, preparation for a future project.

Stage Lighting Control

DMXino is a portable diagnostic tool for DMX512, the standard protocol for professional stage lighting and effects.

  • RS-485 Interface: The Arduino uses a MAX485 transceiver chip to translate its TTL serial signals into the balanced differential signal required by DMX cables.
  • Logic Level: Operates at 250kbps, managing up to 512 channels of lighting data (0-255 intensity levels per channel).

Diagnostic Features

  • Channel Scrolling: A Rotary Encoder allows the user to scroll through individual "addresses" to test specific lamps.
  • Remote Testing: Can be used as a "Dummy Console" to trigger fog machines or moving-head lights without needing a massive lighting desk, making it an essential tool for stage technicians.
