The project consisted of a main function defined as that of a trash can, which would be tightly closed and would open upon hands approaching it. Once opened, it would wait for a defined time, allowing us to deposit anything in it, always limited by its dimensions. After the set time, it would close and play an audio file through its integrated speaker; in our case, it would tell a joke to cheer us up at any time of the day.

Hygiene-Focused Waste Management

The Smart Paper Bin 2.0 is a touchless, IoT-enabled waste disposal unit designed for modern office and healthcare environments.

  • Sensor Fusion for Opening: Combines an HC-SR04 Ultrasonic sensor with a secondary PIR motion sensor to detect a hand approaching the bin. The Arduino drives a high-torque MG996R servo to lift the lid only when a human is present and ready to dispose of paper.
  • Fill-Level Monitoring: A second internal ultrasonic sensor measures the distance to the trash. When the bin is 90% full, the Arduino changes a status LED from Green to Red.

Connectivity

  • Emptying Alerts: (Advanced version) Integrates an ESP8266 to send a "Bin Full" notification to a facilities management dashboard, optimizing trash collection routes.
